  • Control of SMA inverters is only available with the cloud SmartgridOne Controller, not with the physical devices.
  • The SMA API is paid. The API usage fees will be charged through.

Supported Devices

Device TypeAPIModbus TCP (Ethernet)
Inverters connected to an SMA Data Manager

Configuration

To control the SMA inverters via the API, you must log in locally to the data manager. Follow the steps below to configure the SMA Data Manager for API access.

Opening configuration wizard

Click on “Configuration” and then go to the “Grid Management” section. In the grid management section, under the “Actual Power” section, click “Go to Configuration.”

Wizard step 1

In the wizard in the SMA data manager, no changes have to be made in step 1. Go to step 2.

Wizard step 2

When doing curtailment, we can differentiate between curtailing to zero production or to zero export. When choosing for zero production, the inverter will not produce any power at all. When choosing for zero export, the inverter will produce power, but it will be consumed and nothing will be exported to the grid (best effort). Select the first option ("Besturing") for zero production. Select the second option ("Regeling") for zero export power:

Wizard step 3

No changes have to be made in step 3. Go to step 4.

Wizard step 4

Here you adjust the fallback to the converter power. I.e., if the internet goes down between the data manager and our server, it will fall back to the preset value within 600 seconds.
